god of ocean

Fishburn and Hughes: "The name by which the Greeks referred to the waters of the Atlantic, believed to be a river surrounding the earth. The mountain which gave Ocean its name is Mount Atlas, which stood at the extremes of the earth and was later identified with the mountain range in north-west Africa that still bears the name. Atlas was the giant described by Homer (Odyssey 1.52) on whose shoulders stood the columns separating Earth from Heaven." (143)
