Tacitus's Annales on the history of the Roman empire to 66 A.D.

Fishburn and Hughes: "CF 121: The surviving books of the Annals (books 1-4, part of 5, most of 6, and 11-16 incomplete) cover the reigns of Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero. The violent episodes depicted show Tacitus' acute perception of tragedy, to which Borges pays tribute in relation to Christ's crucifixion, saying that, though Tacitus did not refer to the crucifixion directly, its occurrence is suggested and implied in his portrayal of the time (Other Inq.167)."
