In the Wars of Independence, in August 1822, General Sucre, in command of the army of Bolívar, arrived in Arequipa and marched to Puno. It was finally taken by Sucre's troops in January 1825, when the Spaniards surrendered Peru. Bolívar visited the city in May 1825." (15)
