Fishburn and Hughes: Azevedo (also Acevedo) An alternative spelling of Borges's family surname on his mother's side, Acevedo. Its Sephardic associations have suggested that Borges had Jewish ancestry, something that he has ambiguously both 'regretfully denied' and acknowledged (Emir Rodríguez Monegal, Jorge Luis Borges: A Literary Biography, NY 1978, 12-13). Daniel Simón Azevedo is a pivotal character in Death and the Compass. A Biography of Tadeo Isidoro Cruz (1829-1874): Francisco Xavier Acevedo was a relative of Borges.
